Iraola’s Bournemouth side finished sixth in the Premier League in 2025/26 because they were intense, organised and direct in the right moments. Liverpool pressing already looks different
There was an early sign of that against Sunderland. Defender Dan Ballard said Liverpool played more “vertically” and aggressively than they did last season. That checks out. The pressing looked higher, the ball moved earlier, and there was a lot less waiting around for the perfect picture.
Vertical football does not mean crude football. There is a lazy habit of confusing directness with panic. Iraola’s teams attack space quickly, pin full-backs, ask centre-halves to turn, and make midfielders run towards their own goal. It is calculated pressure. The point is to force bad decisions and win territory fast.
That should suit Liverpool. This squad has runners, full-backs who can drive the game, and attackers who are far more dangerous when the match is stretched. A passive structure dulled those strengths last season. A high press and fast transition game should sharpen them again.

The other useful point in Dyche’s comments is the respect for Iraola’s adaptability. Liverpool are not going to win every match in the same way. Some opponents will sit deep. Some will press high. There is also a hard truth here. Teams stopped fearing Liverpool last season. They found them manageable, even comfortable at times. That is the part Iraola has to change first. The early evidence suggests he knows it.
One pre-season game proves very little, but it can still show direction. Right now, the direction is obvious. Liverpool look quicker, more vertical and more hostile to play against. Dyche’s verdict from previous meetings helps explain why. Iraola’s football is intense, practical and demanding. If he gets this squad fully committed to it, opponents will spend a lot more time running back towards their own goal.
