The Pittsburgh Steelers remain in contract extension talks with Joey Porter Jr., drawing reactions and comments from many individuals, including his teammate Jalen Ramsey.
The Pro Bowl corner was asked what he thought about Porter Jr.'s situation still not being settled with the team, and had a message for the Steelers.
"We need the whole secondary out there. They got to pay Joey Porter," Ramsey told reporters , per 93.7 The Fan.
"I'm overly in Joey's corner. Joey needs to get compensated for what is a valuable part of this secondary and valuable part of this defense and team," Ramsey said .
According to ESPN's Brooke Pryor , Porter was placed on the team's physically unable to perform (PUP) list on the first day of training camp after aggravating a back injury at a team mobility workout. He hasn't practiced with the Steelers since then, but has attended practices, typically standing on the sidelines with teammates, including Ramsey.
Ramsey was activated off the PUP list on Monday, and it's clear he realizes just how important Porter is to the Steelers' success in the coming season. A member of the Steelers since 2023, Porter achieved a career-tying 17 assisted tackles, an interception, 14 passes defended, and his first career sack last season after playing in 14 games.
He also believes in his value, having previously said during the team's June minicamp that he thinks he is among the top cornerbacks since he's been in the league.
With the Steelers ranking seventh-worst among NFL teams in yards allowed last season and fourth-worst in passing yards allowed, they'll need every member of the defense out there if they want any chance of competing in the upcoming season's AFC.
While Pittsburgh earned a Wild Card spot last season, it came after the Baltimore Ravens' potential game-winning field goal missed. With that, Aaron Rodgers and the Steelers moved on.
The Steelers will finish out the preseason slate this coming week, as they'll play the Buffalo Bills on Thursday, Aug. 27. After that, it's just a few weeks until the regular season kicks off on Sunday, Sept. 13, when Pittsburgh hosts the Atlanta Falcons.
