Conor Benn sat down with Sky Sports to discuss his upcoming welterweight title shot against Ryan Garcia on September 12. Speaking about his training camp and preparation for the fight, Benn says he’s been putting himself through it to ensure he’s in the best position possible to perform on the night.
“I give 110% regardless,” Benn said of training camp. “I think every one of my previous fights led me to this moment…My driving factor is for myself. It’s for me to prove that I’m one of the best in the world.”
Benn will enter this welterweight showdown as the current betting underdog but says he’s not really taking any of that into account much, but does like the feeling of being in the position of shutting people up.
“I like being the underdog, I think you perform at your best. You’re just chomping at the bit to get in there and just shock the world,” Benn said. “It’s a blessing to be in the position that I’m in. To go from stadium show sellouts to headlining in Las Vegas for the WBC world title, I just sit down and go ‘yeah, life’s good.’ This is everything I’ve dreamed of and worked hard for so I’m leaving no stone unturned and just making sure I give myself every possible chance in coming out victorious.
“I haven’t made this weight in four years so it’s definitely challenging. Hopefully this will be my final fight at this weight.”
When asked about Garcia’s antics and whether he believes he’s being taken seriously as a challenger, Benn says he’s not getting caught up in the gamesmanship but rather just looking to take care of business.
“I’m just going to go in there and do what I do, which is plant one on his chin and try put him to sleep.”
