See the full story · 2 sourcesCHICAGO — Four hours before game time Wednesday, a Yankees player dressed in a Yankee Stadium fan giveaway this season, a sleeveless No. 27 Giancarlo Stanton basketball jersey, did some jogging on the outfield warning track at Rate Field.
It was reliever Fernando Cruz, not the Yankees’ injured designated hitter, who is in Chicago for this week’s series against the White Sox and Cubs.
Stanton was spotted walking through the Yankees clubhouse and into a back room during pre-game media availability, but it’s unknown if he continued his running program before sitting out his 82 nd game in a row with a calf strain that initially was termed “low grade.”
That’s more than half the season on the injured list with an injury that occurred on a jog from first base to second base on a walk by Jazz Chisholm during an April 24 game in Houston.
Since Stanton’s absence, he started a running program, was shut down with a setback in June and then started running again almost four weeks ago. He’s done some running outdoors in the last two weeks, but still hasn’t been cleared to run the bases.
The over/under is listed at 7.5 total runs on BetMGM for Thursday’s series finale between the Yankees and the White Sox. Our comprehensive BetMGM Sportsbook review provides an in-depth guide on how to navigate their platform.
With Stanton unavailable for interviews, Boone frequently has been asked for updates, which usually include a simplistic answer: “He’s doing better.”
Before Wednesday’s Yankees-White Sox game, Boone was asked this question by NJ.com:
You’ve been saying for a couple weeks that Stanton’s been running and he’s feeling better, but he’s not running the bases yet. If that’s the case, what’s the delay? Does he need to run X amount of days or weeks?
“He just needs to get to a level intensity-wise with the running,” Boone responded. “You don’t need to keep asking. He’s running. When it gets really close to being in a game or something, we’ll let you know. It’s not there yet.”
The Yankees’ lineup is missing three of its best hitters with right fielder Aaron Judge (fractured rib), Cody Bellinger (hamstring strain) and Stanton shelved.
Judge, who last played May 31, won’t be cleared to resume baseball activities until his rib shows more healing. He doesn’t yet have a date for reimaging.
Bellinger, who was injured last weekend in Philadelphia, is expected to be sidelined for four to six weeks.
Boone maintains the Yankees are counting on all three sluggers back at some point.
