New York Giants pass rusher Abdul Carter is already making his presence felt at training camp—not just with his athleticism, but with his confidence and competitive fire.
During Thursday’s practice at the Sports Performance Center at The Greenbrier, Carter delivered one of his most impressive performances yet against All-Pro left tackle Andrew Thomas. The explosive defender consistently showcased the speed, bend, and burst that made him one of the top defensive prospects in the NFL Draft, even winning several reps against one of the league’s premier offensive linemen.
As expected, Carter celebrated his success with plenty of trash talk, letting Thomas—and everyone within earshot—know about it.
But if Carter was hoping to get a reaction, he picked the wrong opponent.
Thomas remained calm throughout the session, refusing to respond to the rookie’s verbal jabs. The veteran tackle has built a reputation as one of the NFL’s most composed players, and Thursday’s practice was no exception.
Giants camp turns intense
“That’s all defenders,” Thomas said , brushing off Carter’s attempts to get under his skin.
Thomas explained that he rarely allows emotions to influence his play, no matter how much an opponent tries to provoke him.
“If we’re just playing, you won’t get me out of my character,” Thomas said. “It definitely frustrates them. Don’t say anything back. They just get pissed, they start complaining to the ref about holding.”
The only time Thomas believes a response is necessary is if an opponent crosses the line.
“The only way I’ll retaliate is if somebody does something cheap to me or one of my teammates,” he said.
The spirited matchup between Carter and Thomas offered one of the highlights of the Giants ’ practice. Carter’s ability to challenge an elite offensive tackle is an encouraging sign for New York’s defense, while Thomas’ steady approach demonstrated why he remains one of the team’s leaders.
Training camp is designed to test players physically and mentally, and Thursday’s battle accomplished both. Carter showed he has the talent and swagger to compete at the NFL level, while Thomas proved that experience and composure can be just as valuable as any highlight-reel play.
