Topline House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., addressed anger over his recent private meeting with President Donald Trump’s son-in-law and aide Jared Kushner, saying he took the meeting to discuss the affordability crisis, but insisted he still intends to hold President Donald Trump and his allies accountable.
In a video posted on X , Jeffries said he wanted to discuss the “Jared Kushner situation,” and claimed Kushner “asked for a meeting” with him.
Jeffries said he agreed to the meeting to discuss “the affordability crisis that exists — that is not a hoax,” in a jibe towards the president.
The House Democratic leader, however, insisted that “no one is going to get a pass,” and he intends to hold “every single member of the Trump cartel accountable…on day one,” presumably if Democrats win control of the House.
Without naming anyone in particular, Jeffries said anyone who is “stealing from…shortchanging…or screwing over the American people,” will be held accountable.
Jeffries said House Democrats have battled the Republicans and Trump on various issues including ICE, tariffs, Medicaid and “reckless war of choice in Iran,” among other things.
The House Democratic leader also touted results by pointing out that “Pam Bondi is gone, Kristi Noem is gone, and we’re just getting started.”
Citing five unnamed sources with knowledge of the matter, the New York Times reported on Sunday that Jeffries held a private meeting with Kushner, during which the two discussed “potential areas of common ground.” The meeting took place in New York City and was reportedly arranged by a mutual friend of the two. They reportedly discussed issues including housing, immigration, and cost of living during the meeting, and Kushner purportedly urged the Democratic leader to meet with White House chief of staff, Susie Wiles. The meeting comes a few months ahead of the midterms, where Democrats are seen as favorites to win control of the House.
Jeffries' decision to meet with Kushner drew condemnation and criticism from several prominent Democratic supporters, progressive commentators and critics of the Trump administration. Crooked Media co-founder and former Obama White House staffer Tommy Vietor wrote : “Jared Kushner has no actual government job; he just uses his family connections to get money from gulf autocrats and fund corrupt deals. The only way Rep. Jeffries should work with him is with demands for documents and subpoenas.”
