19 days till Arizona Cardinals' opener: Remembering the 2019 season
We continue the countdown to the start of the Arizona Cardinals ' regular season. Today, Tuesday, August 25, is 19 days away from the Arizona Cardinals' regular-season opener on Sept. 13 on the road against the Los Angeles Chargers.
With 19 days until Week 1, let's look back at the 2019 season for the Cardinals.
In 2019, it was the first season as head coach for Kliff Kingsbury, hired after a 3-13 2018 season. They drafted quarterback Kyler Murray first overall.
It was not a great season, but it was promising. They went 5-10-1. They had a three-game winning streak after starting the season 0-3-1.
Offensively, they ranked 21st in yards and 16th in points. Defensively, they were the worst in yards allowed and 28th in points.
2019 individual honors, leaders
Murray won Offensive Rookie of the Year.
Safety Budda Baker and outside linebacker Chander Jones were Pro Bowlers, with Jones also receiving first-team All-Pro honors. He was second in Defensive Player of the Year voting.
Murray passed for 3,722 yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He also rushed for four touchdowns.
Kenyan Drake, a midseason addition via trade, led the team with 643 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. Murray was second with 544 yards.
Larry Fitzgerald was the team's leading receiver with 75 catches for 804 yards, while Christian Kirk had one fewer target and had 68 receptions for 709 yards.
Jones had 19 sacks and eight forced fumbles on defense, which led the league. Baker had 147 total tackles and led the NFL with 104 solo tackles. Cornerback Byron Murphy, a rookie that season, led the team with 10 pass breakups.
