Fernandes’ efforts were paramount to United bouncing back from their dismal opening-day defeat to Hull City, and the Reds now have their first win on the board in 2026/2027.
Reacting at full-time on Sky Sports, Neville said: “He (Fernandes) is exceptional. He’s the best United signing in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era by an absolute mile.
“I think the biggest accolade that you can get in football is being voted the PFA Player of the Year, because that’s your fellow professionals, and it’s hard to get the opposition’s dressing room to vote for you.
“I don’t think the criticism’s been there against him in the last 12-18 months. I think, to be fair, he’s ridden that period where he did sometimes get a bit frustrated or he reacted [badly] as a captain. He’s completely changed.
“He’s matured. He’s now got the respect of his professionals, to the point where they’re voting him the PFA Player of the Year. He’s exceptional in the sense that he takes risks, he passes forward, [and] he always looks to impact the game positively.”

Fernandes winning the prestigious PFA award came on the back of his record-breaking season in 2025/2026, which ended with him setting a new Premier League assist record of 21 in a single term.
While such accolades emphasise his status as one of the world’s best, the 31-year-old will have his heart set on securing team glory this campaign by winning some silverware.
United have four opportunities to do so thanks to their inclusion in the Champions League, and performances like today’s must fill the squad with the belief that they can be successful in the coming nine months.
