The Minnesota Vikings have a hot quarterback competition on their hands. Actually, quite a few franchises join them in having hot quarterback battles, including Kirk Cousins vs. Fernando Mendoza for the Las Vegas Raiders and Shedeur Sanders against Deshaun Watson for the Cleveland Browns .
But, this Vikings competition is special. Third-year player J.J. McCarthy and veteran Kyler Murray are duking it out for the prize.
Bleacher Report has released a tally of the 1,000 best players in the NFL going into the new season. Sure, 1,000 is a lot of players to rank, but it also makes for a fascinating read.

So, where did McCarthy land ? He's No. 889, so at least he made the cut. Murray's name isn't even in the top 1,000. But, that's because he's seen by the scouts as a bounce-back candidate following his time with the Arizona Cardinals .
What's disconcerting for McCarthy is the warning Bleacher Report gives him. He could be a "bust," they say. That's rough.
The report says that McCarthy, a former first-round pick, "had a rocky 2025. J.J. McCarthy played 10 games last season in his first real NFL starting experience," adding that he threw for more interceptions at 12 than touchdowns at 11.
"McCarthy had moments during the season where his arm talent was on display, and he made the right decisions at the line of scrimmage," they add. However, he's "inexperienced as a true dropback passer and requires more reps to further his development."
They add that McCarthy "has a ways to go to avoid a bust label in the very near future." So, yes, McCarthy could very soon be labeled a draft "bust" for his time in Minnesota, but he can also turn it around.
