LSU football QB Sam Leavitt makes first appearance since transfer
Sam Leavitt caused a stir when he left Arizona State and entered the transfer portal. The veteran QB led Arizona State to a College Football Playoff appearance, yet decided to look for something new. LSU football needed a QB as Lane Kiffin took over as head coach and the Tigers won Leavitt's services.
Leavitt was a massive get for the Tigers, ranking as the top quarterback in the portal.
Leavitt missed the end of the 2025 season with an injury and was limited during LSU's spring practice. Leavitt did not speak to the media in the spring and was not at SEC Media Days, but finally made a public appearance at an event at LSU on Thursday evening. Leavitt opened up about his decision to transfer.
"I think leaving ASU, I had a comfortable situation, walk in the building, I saw my guys, built great relationships, won a lot of games there, but I want to do something a little bit different. And it's funny, that's kind of what everyone's saying around here, it's just different, it really is," Leavitt said.
The culture at LSU has stood out to Leavitt. That's a good sign for Kiffin and staff in year one.
"Every aspect, we come out here to practices, the way individual reps are ran, the way every single coach is just so poured into this, the time that we meet outside the facility," Leavitt said.
Leavitt mentioned LSU giving him the chance to compete against elite defenders like Ty Benefield day in and day out.
"You talk about being a pro, trying to become the best version of yourself, and there's no other place to do it other than here," Leavitt said.
