Vikings' Brian Flores Reveals Plan for Jamal Adams

Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores is quite excited about what’s possible with the recent addition of Jamal Adams.
Flores talked about how the longtime safety brings versatility to the table, and the Vikings plan to make the most of that. The former LSU star has made first-team All-Pro once and second-team All-Pro twice, so the Vikings are expecting big things from the 30-year-old.
“A lot of competition at backer, safety. Obviously he’s played a lot of different roles, so what’s it gonna be? We’ll see what that looks like,” Flores told reporters on Wednesday.
Adams makes both linebacker-type plays and safety-type plays. He has 22.5 sacks, eight forced fumbles and 546 tackles in his career. He also has 36 pass deflections and four interceptions, so Adams is dangerous anywhere on the field.
“I tell guys all the time, ‘Your role with this group is whatever you make it. ’ The more you can do and be productive with — I think (Josh) Metellus is a good example of that,” Flores said.
Metellus, a safety, has played in many spots for the Vikings defense since 2020, when the team took him with a sixth-round draft pick. Metellus has 369 tackles, three sacks, five forced fumbles, 22 pass deflections and six interceptions in his career, so Flores is right to see the comparison.
Adams has been a journeyman in his career with five different stops before Minnesota. The New York Jets took Adams with the No. 6 pick in 2017, and he played for the Seattle Seahawks, Tennessee Titans and Detroit Lions before the Raiders and Vikings stints.
That means Adams is no stranger to learning new playbooks. However, he will have to do it extra quickly this year since he just joined the Vikings on Monday after signing a one-year deal with the team.
“He’s got a lot of catching up to do as far as playbook and getting comfortable. But 36 hours in, it’s been good,” Flores said.
