Newcastle United has been among the busiest clubs in Europe when it comes to recruiting young talent this summer, but that might have forfecully come to an end.
A little-known Premier League regulation could have a major influence on how the remainder of the Magpies’ transfer window unfolds, according to The Shields Gazette’s Mark Carruthers .
Carruthers reported that Newcastle is one signing away from reaching the maximum number of overseas under-21 players they are permitted to sign from foreign clubs during a single season. The pundit explained that Newcastle have already completed deals for Ewen Jaouen, Bazoumana Toure, Sean Steur, Afner Ca and Aladji Bamba, all of whom fall under the post-Brexit regulations introduced by the Premier League, the FA and the EFL. Lukas Hornicek, however, does not count toward that quota because the Czech goalkeeper is 24 years old.
“In the Premier League, the number of overseas U21 players a club can sign will be limited to three in the January transfer window and six per season moving forwards. This enables the recruitment of the best players from around the world to train and play together with homegrown talent,” the FA statement says, per Carruthers.
That leaves Newcastle with room for just one more overseas signing under the age of 21 before next month’s transfer deadline.
Carruthers also highlights another important Brexit-related restriction affecting the club’s recruitment. Premier League and EFL clubs are unable to sign players under the age of 18 from overseas clubs, which is why 17-year-old Ecuadorian winger Johan Martinez will not officially arrive at St. James’ Park until next summer despite Newcastle already agreeing a deal with Independiente del Valle.
The regulation could prove significant as Newcastle continue to reshape Matthias Jaissle’s squad. The Magpies have been linked with several young continental prospects in recent weeks, but once that final under-21 overseas slot is used, any further young additions from abroad would have to fall outside those restrictions.
