How ‘Hadestown: The Musical’ Topped $20 Million at the Box Office to Become an Unlikely Indie Blockbuster
For Mara Isaacs, the show's creative producer, the outsized box office returns are just the latest milestone for a production that has defied the odds at every point. "Hadestown," which retells the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice, began its life as a concept album from Anaïs Mitchell, before getting fine-tuned in regional workshops and off-Broadway shows with the help of director Rachel Chavkin. It opened on Broadway in 2019, where the tragic love story, imaginative staging, and bluesy, jazzy score captivated audiences. After winning the Tony for best musical, "Hadestown" has become a staple on the Great White Way and beyond. "I'm not really surprised by the [ film 's] success, but only because 'Hadestown' has exceeded expectations everywhere it has performed," Isaacs told IndieWire. "That was true on Broadway. That was true on its first national tour. That was true when it opened on the West End. It has been the small little indie engine that could. Audiences connect with this material and they seem to connect with it in every form."
For Bleecker Street , the indie shingle that released the filmed stage show, "Hadestown: The Musical" justifies a pivot the company made in 2025 with the launch of a new division, Crosswalk . The bespoke label was designed to release "event cinema," and has already distributed a filmed version of "Waitress: The Musical" and "Stray Kids: The dominate Experience," a concert film of the K-pop group's performances at Los Angeles' SoFi Stadium. Next up is "George Michael: The Faith Tour," which captures the pop icon during two 1988 shows at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy during the height of his chart-topping dominance.
Kent Sanderson, CEO of Bleecker Street, argues that the outsized ticket sales were partly attributable to the unique promotional campaign .
"We leveraged the event cinema model to rally fan communities to come and support the work," Sanderson said. "With 'Hadestown,' we put tickets on sale about six weeks before the film actually came out, and released the trailer on the same day with messaging to go buy tickets now because it will only be in theaters for a few nights."
And it opened on July 24, 2026, sandwiched between the summer's two biggest films, "The Odyssey," which debuted on July 17, and "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," which hit theaters on July 31.
"People probably thought we were crazy to go between two record-breaking movies," Sanderson said. "But we found our lane and were able to create the room we needed to coexist."
Isaacs also thinks that the quality of the "capture" propelled the film's success, pointing to the painstaking work of Steam Motion and Sound, which carefully mapped out how it would record three shows from the West End production at London's Lyric Theatre.
"Every decision that was made was in order to make this truly cinematic," Isaacs said. "It was, how do we capture the magic of what happens on stage so that it translates to a screen? And a lot of time and thought went into that before the team even set foot in a theater."
"Hadestown: The Musical" is finally wrapping up its big screen run and will be available on demand on August 25. Sanderson said he's already seeing strong pre-sales, not only for streaming access to the movie but for its DVD and Blu-ray release on October 20.
"Within a couple of hours, it was already the number three physical media product on Amazon," Sanderson said. "That's because releasing it in theaters makes it a more premium experience and that allows people to justify renting or buying the film later in a way they wouldn't if it were a straight-to-streaming release."
Some theater producers have been wary of releasing filmed versions of shows that are still playing in Broadway and the West End, because they fear that offering cheaper access will discourage fans from shelling out hundreds of dollars to see a musical on stage. In the case of "Hadestown," Isaacs has seen a surge in ticket sales for the stage productions, as well as for streams of the show's Broadway cast recording.
"For a lot of people, the film has been a portal into the world of 'Hadestown,'" Isaacs said. "It has made them even more engaged with the material. The thing that struck me the most is how emotional a lot of people are about the film. They keep talking about being in tears in a movie theater filled with other people. It's so validating to hear about people having such a deep emotional and visceral response to the storytelling."
