The University of Maryland Eastern Shore is set to start a new women's flag football program during the 2026-27 school year. And on Monday, they announced who will be leading that program as their head coach.
Duane Tolson has been hired to be the women's flag football head coach, the university announced this week. Tolson, who graduated from UMES in 2000, comes to UMES after recently serving as the head girls flag football coach at KIPP Legacy High School in Washington, D.C.
"As we prepare to launch our women's flag football program, we are excited to welcome Coach Tolson to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore," Vice President of Athletics Tara A. Owens said in a press release announcing the hiring. "Coach Tolson has shown the ability to develop and build competitive teams while possessing a great knowledge of the game. With his guidance on and off the field, UMES will serve as a model for the promotion and growth of women's flag football. We also look forward to contributing to the sport's development at the collegiate level and welcome members of our community to support this initiative."
During his final season at KIPP Legacy, his team went 10-1-1 and made a postseason championship game appearance. He was also coached the Alter Ego's flag football teams, Young Guns Coed Flag Football Team, Sharks Women's Flag Football Team, and Capitol Punishment Women's Flag Football Team throughout his coaching career.
"It is an exciting time at UMES," Tolson said. "I want to thank the University leadership team for officially bringing women's flag football to UMES and for choosing me to lead the program. We are going to build a team of young ladies who will proudly and positively represent UMES on the field, in the classroom and in the community."
UMES announced their new women's flag football program in June, saying that they would be competing in the MEAC. The announcement came after the MEAC announced that they would sponsor women's flag football during the upcoming school year.
