And unlike some other teams, the Cubs might actually have more interest in pursuing a pitcher with multiple years of control.
In this case, that looks like someone like Los Angeles Angels lefty Reid Detmers.
ESPN's Jesse Rogers named Detmers specifically in a new article on Monday as he examined what the Cubs could do in the coming days.
"The Cubs also have some expiring contracts on the mound, so trading for a controllable pitcher works for their future as well as their present," Rogers writes. "Los Angeles Angels starter Reid Detmers would fit that need. As usual, prices are currently high for those pitchers, according to league sources, but Chicago has some infield depth at the major and minor league level to trade from. That surplus is their strength, so don't expect the Cubs to offload much, if any, from their major league team. They want what most teams want -- a chance to take down the Dodgers this season and stay competitive for years to come."

The Cubs currently have Matthew Boyd and Shota Imanaga healthy.
Jameson Taillon just returned from injury.
Edward Cabrera, Ben Brown and Justin Steele are all out hurt.
Even if one or two of them can make it back, it's hard to predict how pitchers will perform so soon after injury, and there's no guarantee everyone else stays healthy in the meantime.
Detmers would make a lot of sense on a lot of levels for the Cubs.
