49ers news: It sounds like Nick Martin will get the first shot at SAM linebacker

More observations from the day:
Defensive back Nate Hobbs was the only player on the active roster not participating at the beginning of practice. Hobbs dealt with knee issues last season.
Offensive tackle Vederian Lowe and wide receiver Christian Kirk were hobbled a bit during the session.
It was a strong day for QB Brock Purdy , who went 10-of-12 in team drills with the highlight coming on a deep ball down the left sideline to WR Mike Evans for a big gain against CB Deommodore Lenoir .
Conversely, we saw a couple of interceptions for backup QB Mac Jones , including one thrown right to S Marques Sigle .
LB Nick Martin appears to be getting the first crack at the Sam linebacker spot, though the Niners have multiple options to work through there.
The same is true of Connor Colby at left guard. He took all the reps with the starters Sunday, though Chris Foerster said Robert Jones will also compete there.
49ers first impressions: Shanahan arrives, Purdy and Evans connect, and Bosa returns
“Nick Bosa looks better than he did before he got hurt last year,” 49ers left tackle Trent Williams said. “I see him every day. I can’t tell he had an injury and came back from anything. Most people with an injury that catastrophic, you can see it with something, like with atrophy in the leg.”
Bosa looks like a player who can singlehandedly rectify one of the 49ers’ most glaring weaknesses from last season: the pass rush. The team finished last in the NFL with just 20 sacks. Their struggles came after the 49ers actually sealed two early-season wins, including one over the Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks, with their pass rush.
49ers wanted to keep Shanahan accident quiet, and some in the media complied
Others who cover the 49ers knew about it, too. Before the news was released, Tim Kawakami of the San Francisco Standard dropped a hint: “I think there’s going to be some news later this morning.” Kawakami later admitted that he was aware of the situation, but that he didn’t report it because he “ knew about 15% of the details .”
Still, he apparently knew 100 percent of the fact that there was an accident. Not every detail related to the story needed to be reported, especially when plenty of the basic information about the collision was available from public sources.
News regarding events that entail the involvement of the police and/or other first responders rarely gets held. It’s public information. (For example, news regarding Tony Romo’s recent arrest was shared as soon as Fox News 6 in Wisconsin obtained the public arrest detention report.) In this situation, the conduits for publicly-available information to the general public either were asleep at the switch or made a deliberate choice not to perform one of the core functions of journalism.
Day 1 of 49ers training camp shows glimpse of change on LB depth chart
Big changes appear to be coming for the San Francisco 49ers linebacking corps. At least that’s what Day 1 of training camp taught us.
The Sacramento Bee’s Chris Biderman reported second-year linebacker Nick Martin was running with the first-team defense as the Sam linebacker alongside veterans Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw.
This could be an indicator of some of the changes coming from defensive coordinator Raheem Morris. Warner will take his usual Mike LB spot, while Greenlaw slots back in as the Will LB where he spent his first six NFL seasons in San Francisco. The third LB wasn’t used as frequently in past iterations of the 49ers’ defense and the prototypical player at that spot was bigger than Martin’s 6-foot, 220-pound frame.

Offensive play of the day
Quarterback Brock Purdy and veteran wide receiver Mike Evans figure to get quite familiar with each other through training camp and heading into the regular season.
Those two gave an early preview of what might be expected this year, as they hooked up on a couple of pass completions. The top play was a deep pass down the left sideline in which Evans was matched against cornerback Deommodore Lenoir. Safety Marques Sigle was a split-second late, as Evans made the reception.
Defensive play of the day
Linebackers Garret Wallow and Jalen Graham teamed up for the most-notable defensive play of the day for an interception of backup quarterback Mac Jones.
Jones looked to fit a throw into Jordan Watkins over the middle, but Wallow made a leaping deflection of the pass. The ball was deflected again before hitting the ground, and Graham finally gathered it in and returned it back the other way.
Competition to watch
Connor Colby appears to be in the lead in the competition for the starting job at left guard. Now, all he has to do is give the 49ers no reason to try anyone else in that spot.
Colby and veteran pickup Robert Jones separated themselves during the offseason program, Foerster said. Colby, who started six games for the 49ers last season, is playing with a lot more confidence and decisiveness, Williams said.
