Questions as Commanders Host Miami Dolphins for Joint Practice
The next phase of the offseason officially begins on Wednesday morning for the Washington Commanders as they welcome the Miami Dolphins for a joint practice on Wednesday ahead of the first preseason game on Friday night at Northwest Stadium.
Both teams will introduce a lot of different looks from one season ago given the Dolphins are preparing for life under first-year head coach Jeff Hafley, who spent the last two seasons as the defensive coordinator of the Green Bay Packers. Despite preparing for year three under head coach Dan Quinn, the Commanders can say the same given the rest of the week marks a chance for a pair of first-year coordinators -- David Blough and Daronte Jones -- to evaluate their new schemes and begin ironing out the glaring kinks through preseason.
While Dan Quinn pointed to the chance for both coaching staff to analyze how certain players will be featured over the next 72 hours, both Quinn and Hafley previously connected to ensure the joint practice will remain productive.
"Head coach to head coach, these are the things we want to get accomplished, set the guidelines and as the home team, this is what we want to hit. This is where we'll go and I give that to him and then the coordinators also balance one another up to make sure looks, plays, so we can throw a great practice together," Quinn said on Monday.

1. With Washington’s secondary TBD, how can Miami’s pass catchers test the unit this week?
Miami has a seemingly equal problem at wide receiver, as there are many players who will be showcasing their talents to earn the starting job. The unit was supposed to be led by Jalen Tolbert and Tutu Atwell, but that might no longer be the case. The Commanders will have to look out for Malik Washington and rookie Caleb Douglas. Both have the ability to create space and go up for the contested catch. Washington has some dangerous YAC abilities as well. Look for the Dolphins to go for the deep shots to test the Commanders' secondary.
2. Where have the Dolphins made strides under first year HC Jeff Hafley?
Hafley has not been wanting to talk about the Dolphins’ identity or outright say there is a culture already built in this team, but it has been. Miami is playing with a physicality they did not have under Mike McDaniel, or rather, it is a style of play that is not the same. There is physicality and toughness that has shown in training camp and throughout the offseason program that could shock some people if the team truly puts it al together.
3. What’s the matchup you’re most looking forward to watching?
It has to be the Dolphins' pass rush vs the Commanders' offensive line. Losing Laremy Tunsil is huge, and it is a bit of a bummer due to not being able to test Chop Robinson and the pass rush against one of the better linemen in the league. Now, can Miami still get loose and get after Jayden Daniels? Will the Commanders line hold without one of their anchors? This will be a big litmus test for both teams.
