INDIANAPOLIS — The Colts defense is getting a welcome figure back on the practice field this week.
Charvarius Ward is returning to practice after missing the last two weeks due to back pain, and he’ll begin the process of getting ready for the regular season.
Ward, the team’s other starter on the outside opposite Sauce Gardner , has been dealing with a back injury since the week the Colts began joint practices by traveling to New England. Ward did not make that trip, and he did not play against Atlanta at Grand Park last week.
“Mooney’s doing good,” Indianapolis coach Shane Steichen said Tuesday. “He’ll be back at practice today, he’ll go through some individual stuff. He’s in a good spot.”

The Colts defense badly need Ward available for the season opener against the Ravens on Sept. 13.
The team’s top backup at cornerback, Cam Taylor-Britt , is suspended for the season opener because of a violation of the NFL’s personal conduct policy, stemming from two arrests for driving-related offenses in Ohio. If Ward’s back injury was going to linger until that point, the Colts did not have clear answers at the position; the next two cornerbacks on the depth chart, Mekhi Blackmon and Johnathan Edwards, have struggled the last two weeks.

Defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo acknowledged Monday that there is still uncertainty at cornerback beyond the top four players.
“This last game is big for a lot of guys, and it's not just going to be based on one week, it's a sum of all the things that they've done so far,” Anarumo said. “We’ll put it all together, and certainly Chris (Ballard) and his staff will look at the entirety of it, but I still think there's a number of spots where this week is big and where it comes down to a guy or two and how do they function this week in practice and in the game?”
