The Padres also acquired right-hander Casey Mize from the Detroit Tigers , but he had a rough debut, allowing eight earned runs on nine hits in 3.1 innings in yesterday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks .
Still, Ray and Mize will be vital members of San Diego's postseason rotation if it can make it that far.
To make space for Ray on the active roster, the Padres had to cut a fellow starter. On Wednesday, the NL Central club announced that German Marquez was designated for assignment.
Marquez made 13 appearances, including 10 starts with the Padres, after spending the first 11 seasons of his career with the Colorado Rockies .
Perhaps the Padres thought he could have more success away from Coors Field, but that wasn't the case.
Marquez allowed 55 hits in 53 innings and posted a 5.26 ERA and 1.491 WHIP.

The Venezuela native had some solid seasons in Colorado but was never the ace of the staff. Marquez earned his first and only All-Star selection to date in 2021.
Before the National League introduced the designated hitter, Marquez won a Silver Slugger Award in 2018.
In 65 plate appearances, he amazingly hit .300 with a homer and five RBIs.
