According to NFL insider Adam Schefter of ESPN , the Commanders are signing veteran defensive tackle Maurice Hurst II, among a recent flurry of moves.
Hurst, 31, adds a ton of experience to the Commanders defensive line after appearing in 65 career games over the past seven seasons.
He has spent the past three years with the Cleveland Browns, recording 39 tackles, two sacks, one fumble recovery, four passes defensed and one interception.
However, injuries and a dip in production have kept him sidelined as of late as he's played in just 10 games over the last two seasons. In 2024, he suffered an ankle injury in Week 1 that landed him on injured reserve, and then in 2025, he spent most of the season on Cleveland's practice squad.
Hurst began his professional career as a fifth-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Raiders, who he spent the first three years of his career with.
He was then waived by the Raiders after the 2020 season and he signed a one-year contract with the San Francisco 49ers. This is where injuries began to pile up for Hurst, though, as he suffered a torn bicep, ending his season.
A native of Canton, Massachusetts, Hurst played college football at Michigan, where he recorded 106 tackles, 12.5 sacks, one forced fumble and three passes defensed from 2014-17.
