San Jose State opens the 2026 season after posting a dismal 3-9 record last year. The Spartans closed 2025 with a 41-14 loss to Fresno State, a game in which they threw five interceptions and allowed 23 points off turnovers. San Jose State returns only three players who started at least six games last season, all of whom are linemen, with offensive linemen Tyler Chen and Joseph Harbert and defensive lineman Ethan Powell. The Spartans did protect the quarterback well in 2025, allowing only 13 sacks, the fewest in the Mountain West.
USC went 9-4 last season, but finished the season with a bad taste in their mouth. The Trojans ended the year with a 30-27 overtime loss to TCU in the Alamo Bowl, finishing with 392 total yards. Quarterback Jayden Maiava returns after throwing for 280 yards and a touchdown in that game. He finished the season with 3,711 passing yards, 24 touchdowns and a 65.8% completion rate, all solid numbers they’ll hope he can exceed. Running back King Miller is also back after rushing for 99 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries against TCU.
