Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear on Sunday renewed calls for Senator Mitch McConnell to provide a public update on his health, stating that the longtime Republican senator "absolutely refuses" to explain his condition to his constituents.
Appearing on CBS News' Face the Nation , the Democrat governor said he has repeatedly sought information regarding McConnell's status without receiving a response. Beshear emphasized that Kentuckians deserve direct communication amid ongoing questions regarding the 84-year-old's capacity to serve.
"I've heard absolutely nothing back from Mitch McConnell," he said. "And while I do hope that he is getting better, I've known him my entire life. I wish him no harm. I actually wish him good health. His boss are the people of Kentucky."
McConnell's health status remains under public scrutiny two months after his fall at his Washington, D.C., home and extended hospitalization. The senator, a polio survivor who announced in February 2025 that he planned to retire , has endured a series of medical incidents in recent years, including multiple falls and unexplained episodes .
McConnell's absence from the Senate carries broader implications given the GOP's narrow majority where individual members' health and capacity can impact legislative proceedings and leadership decisions.
Newsweek reached out to McConnell's office by email on Sunday for comment.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune's spokesperson said he'd had a “lengthy and substantive conversation that covered a variety of topics, including national security" with McConnell via phone on July 6.
The following day, Senator John Barrasso of Wyoming, the No. 2 Senate Republican and majority whip, said he had spoken with McConnell for roughly 20 minutes.
Barrasso's spokeswoman said McConnell was “fully engaged and is eager to get back to the Senate.”
The statements provided the first indication from Republican leadership that McConnell was conscious, communicating and engaged in political affairs. But they did not answer the central questions about his medical condition or when he would return.
In a statement issued August 6, the senator's office stated: "Earlier today, I was discharged from the rehabilitation center to continue my recovery at home. Elaine and I are grateful for the many well wishes and support from friends, colleagues, and Kentuckians, and for the attentive care I’ve received from excellent doctors, nurses, therapists, and hospital staff."
The statement continued: “On the advice of my doctors, I’ll maintain an intensive regimen of physical therapy from home during the state work period, and I’ll continue to engage with my staff and colleagues on important Senate business."
Framing the issue around accountability rather than partisanship, Beshear maintained Sunday that elected officials hold a fundamental obligation to communicate with the public when questions arise about their ability to perform their duties.
"All he needs to do is call into this show for two minutes, or Fox News for two minutes, or do a video for two minutes to the people he's supposed to serve," Beshear said. "But you know what? He absolutely refuses to do it."
The governor also urged Thune to ensure lawmakers are capable of carrying out their duties, arguing Senate leaders have a responsibility to address concerns when questions arise about a member's health.
"John Thune, as the leader of the Senate, you've got a duty to make sure all of your senators have the capacity to serve," Beshear said. "And what is he saying? Not my job."
Calls for an update regarding the senator's health have come not only from Democrats but also from some Republicans and political observers who contend that prolonged silence has fueled uncertainty about his ability to continue serving.
Republican Senator Tommy Tuberville of Alabama said in July that lawmakers needed more information about McConnell's prolonged absence as key votes approached.
"Somebody needs to do something. Somebody needs to come out," he told Fox News, adding that senators had received little information about McConnell's status.
McConnell ally and CNN contributor Scott Jennings similarly suggested that more openness could have prevented controversy. In a letter to Thune, Beshear referenced Jennings' July television comments that "a little transparency on the front here would have saved him a whole lot of grief."
However, Jennings said earlier this month that he spoke with McConnell during a phone call where he was "engaged and alert."
"Being at home is better than being in the hospital, that's for sure," Jennings said, adding that McConnell aims to return to the Senate when lawmakers reconvene on September 14.
Jennings also noted that McConnell has always been "private" about his health but realizes the concern about his lengthy absence.
"He told me today, he said, 'I know this is unusual circumstances, I’m sitting here, the doctors tell me I don't have any life-threatening issues, it must seem rather strange,'" Jennings said. "So yeah, I got the feeling he's somewhat aware of it and frankly, somewhat frustrated by it."
Other Republicans have defended McConnell's right to privacy, including Louisiana Senator John Kennedy, who pushed back against speculation about the Kentucky senator's condition and urged critics to "leave Mitch alone," saying he believed his public statements about his recovery, Fox News reported.
