Scottie Scheffler cruises to final FedEx Cup points lead. It may not matter
For the second year in a row, Scottie Scheffler is the FedEx Cup points leader entering the Tour Championship .
Under the format installed last year, it won't matter.
Scheffler's tie for 12th last week at the BMW Championship kept him first on the points list with just short of 5,000. He has a margin of 1,523 points over Matt Fitzpatrick and 1,694 over BMW winner Wyndham Clark .
But all points are wiped out for the Tour Championship, beginning Aug. 27 at East Lake in Atlanta and No. 30 Ryan Fox has just as good a chance to win the FedEx Cup and the $10 million first prize as Scheffler.
Last year, after the PGA Tour ditched the "starting strokes" format in which the FedEx Cup leaders received, progressively, a certain number of strokes under par to begin the tournament, Scheffler had a lead of more than 2,000 points. But Tommy Fleetwood came from ninth place to win the tournament, his first on the PGA Tour, and the FedEx Cup.
Hint: Fleetwood is ninth again this year.
