Pirates Trade Veteran Pitcher to White Sox, per Report
One of the most active teams in baseball over the last few weeks and leading up to the MLB trade deadline has been the Pittsburgh Pirates .
They made a deal ahead of the MLB draft, another deal with the San Diego Padres for a veteran pitcher, acquired a former top prospect from the Washington Nationals, and now Pittsburgh agreed to another trade on Sunday evening.
The Pirates are sending RHP Jose Urquidy to the Chicago White Sox in exchange for RHP prospect Felix Doroteo, per MLB.com's Mark Feinsand .
This trade is far from a blockbuster move that will define either team's season, but it is interesting to see the Pirates trade a big-league-caliber arm for a project pitcher.
The Pirates signed Urquidy to a one-year deal over the offseason, hoping that he could be a depth arm out of their bullpen. However, the 31-year-old had a disastrous start to the season, which led to Pittsburgh optioning him to Triple-A.
After five games at the beginning of the year, Urquidy logged an 8.53 ERA and a 2.68 WHIP in 6.1 innings of work.
The veteran pitcher has been better in the Minor Leagues. He owns a 3.66 ERA and a 1.05 WHIP, recouping some value.

Perhaps one reason the White Sox were interested in acquiring Urquidy is that he's been a starter at Triple-A, and Chicago is thin on starting depth. All 17 games Urquidy has pitched at Triple-A have been starts, and he's averaging just shy of five innings per start.
In return, the Pirates are acquiring a young pitcher who hasn't even made it to affiliate ball yet.
Doroteo signed with the White Sox as an international free agent two winters ago. Injuries kept him sidelined last season, but he's finally made progress in development this year.
The 21-year-old has pitched in 16 games in the Complex League and has one start and one save in 16 games under his belt.
It's an incredibly small sample size, but Doroteo had a 29.6 percent strikeout rate and 13.6 percent walk rate in those appearances.
Given Pittsburgh's recent success in developing pitchers, adding another young arm like Doroteo to the organization is intriguing.
Again, this trade isn't one that will help the Pirates win this season. In fact, trading away a veteran pitcher may only incentivize the front office more to make a move for another arm before August 3.
