But in 2026, they may be talking about the Lions defense. Specifically the linebackers.
The Lions linebacking trio of Jeremiah Rayford, Jullian Lowe and Kendrick Owens return from a 2025 state quarterfinal team. The athletic trio is hoping to cause nightmares for opposing quarterbacks.
"We really put pressure on the (offensive) linemen. They have to think really quickly, with all those people moving around them," said Lowe. "It makes it easier for us to get into the backfield."
The Lions went 9-3 and won the Big 12 Conference last fall. They believe their pressure defense will be a key to repeating as conference champs this season.
"We don't give the quarterback time at all because you have six or seven people coming at you all the time," said Owens. "They have to get the ball out quickly. If the ball isn't gone, it's a sack every play."
Offensively, three players are vying for the starting quarterback position vacated by graduated three-year starter Breon Green. Sophomore Rahiem Pickett, Damarion Taylor and senior Eli O'Donnell, a transfer from Richwoods, are in a training camp tryout for the job.
The Lions open the season at home against Richwoods on Aug. 21.
