Nearly 100 people across 17 states have now fallen ill in a salmonella outbreak linked to recalled eggs .
The 98 people were infected between 21 November and 30 June, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said.
No deaths have been reported in the outbreak, but 26 people have required hospital treatment.
Investigators said that eggs recalled by Midwest Poultry Services are a likely source of the infection, but the Indiana-based company’s products do not account for all of the illnesses.
The company previously recalled nearly 1.6 million dozen eggs produced or distributed from Texas farms between 6 June and 3 July.
The eggs, which were sold under several different brand names, have sell-by or best-by dates between 20 July and 17 August.
The FDA said the recall covers both white and brown cage-free eggs.
Among the stores that received the recalled eggs were Kroger stores in Texas and Louisiana and Brookshire Grocery stores in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico and Mississippi.
Samples collected by Midwest Poultry at farms in Texas tested positive for salmonella, and genetic testing showed that some samples matched the bacteria strain that sickened people, federal officials said.
People are being urged to check their refrigerators and pantries for recalled eggs and throw them away or return them to stores for a refund.
Symptoms of salmonella poisoning include diarrhea, fever, severe vomiting, dehydration and stomach cramps. Most people who get sick recover within a week.
Infections can be severe in young children, older adults and people with weakened immune systems, who may require hospitalization.
Meanwhile, the U.S. continues to battle a major outbreak of cyclosporiasis , a parasitic illness that causes severe gastrointestinal symptoms.
Federal data released last week showed 4,173 confirmed cases across 41 states, with another 7,400 reports awaiting confirmation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Michigan has recorded the highest number of reported cases, with state officials linking thousands of illnesses to contaminated lettuce. The parasite can cause severe diarrhea, vomiting, fever, body aches, dehydration and extreme fatigue.
University of Guanajuato epidemiologist Dr. Alejandro Macías described the illness to The New York Times by saying, “You're barely able to make it to the toilet.”
