The New York Mets celebrate the victory against the San Diego Padres
The New York Mets have been abysmal since the middle of last season, ranking as one of the worst teams in baseball over the last calendar year.
Recently, however, that's started to change. The Mets have quietly been excellent this month, going 11-4 over their last 15 games.
Surprisingly, their hot streak began immediately after the MLB Trade Deadline on Aug. 3, which saw New York part with several stars and seemingly wave the white flag.
Even more surprisingly, the Mets have been rolling without their best hitter, Juan Soto, who hasn't played since July 24 due to a calf injury.

New York already has as many wins in August as it did last month and more than it did in June. The offense has been roughly league average, but the key has been improved pitching, with the Mets allowing just 3.88 runs per game this month.
Young hurlers like Nolan McLean, Zac Thornton and Christian Scott have stepped up recently, carrying New York's rotation. Meanwhile, Kodai Senga has reinvented himself as a dominant reliever after struggling as a starter this year.
The Mets are still last in the NL East, 12 games under .500 and 10 games out of a playoff spot, so it's likely too little, too late. However, time will tell if they can finish the year strong and carry it over into next season.
