Los Angeles Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike became the WNBA All-Star Game's all-time leading scorer during her 11th appearance in the game on Saturday in Chicago, Illinois.
Ogwumike scored 11 points and recorded nine rebounds in just under 18 minutes to help Team Spoon defeat Team Coop by a score of 129-122. Ogwumike has now scored 127 career points across 11 WNBA All-Star Games, which passes Maya Moore's 119 career points in the WNBA All-Star Game.
Ogwumike's 11 All-Star appearances ties WNBA legend Diana Taurasi for the second-most in league history. Sue Bird holds the WNBA record with 13 career appearances in the All-Star Game.
The Sparks had two players selected for the as All-Stars this season. In addition to Ogwumike, veteran guard Kelsey Plum earned an All-Star selection but did not play in the game on Saturday due to injury.
Ogwumike is now in her 10th year at the WNBPA president after she was re-elected for her fourth term in June.
She helped secure a new collective bargaining agreement for the WNBA back in April. Now, she has been involved in several conversations with WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert about the increase in racist, misogynistic and hateful messages players have been receiving.
During All-Star Weekend, Ogwumike kept a neutral stance amid calls to replace Engelbert as commissioner. But Ogwumike did emphasize the importance of building strong relationships between players and front-office leadership.
"Moving forward, we have to get better at maintaining that line of communication between players, whether it’s through player leadership or even just individual players,” Ogwumike said, per ESPN. “There’s a lot of players in this league but I want people to feel approachable, to be able to discuss things with her without having to do it in a reactive sense.”
Ogwumike is at the beginning of a three-year term as president and will remain in the role until June 2029.
