Nearly 41,000 White Sox fans gathered at Rate Field Tuesday for a Pope Leo XIV-themed night featuring the stadiumwide giveaway of a pontiff-style Sox hat and a fifth-inning "peace be with you" greeting.
Before he became leader of the Catholic Church last year, Robert Francis Prevost was known to many as "Father Bob," a Chicago-born Sox fan who attended the team’s 2005 World Series run .
Sox fans and players embraced the local legacy Tuesday, as Sister Mary Jo Sobieck of the Dominican Sisters of Springfield threw the first pitch while the team's Southpaw mascot donned his own pope hat and garb.
