DEKALB, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — Media members attending Rob Harley's weekly press conference Tuesday afternoon got their first look at Northern Illinois University's first football depth chart for this year. At quarterback it listed Jalon Macon or Taron Dickens or Brady Davidson. In other words, coach Harley and his assistant coaches haven't settled on a number one quarterback for Saturday's opener at Iowa, or they have, but they don't want to reveal who it is. Harley made it seem like they wanted to wait until the last minute to make a final decision. He said they'll use the rest of this week of practice to continue the competition for the job. "We're going to finish this whole process and we're not going to, you know, make any rash decisions, and we're going to let the practices and the production show what it's all about. " "I will tell you this. I have been very pleased at the quarterback position." There's not been one day of negativity. What are we doing? Palms up. Why do we do this? We told them this is better for the team to have more variety and more guys competing for the position to make us a better team, and they haven't blinked." Davidson and Macon are the returning quarterbacks from last season. Dickens transferred into NIU late in the spring after posting some eye-popping stats last season at FCS Western Carolina. Harley says all three players bring special traits to the position. He lauded Macon for his ability to turn broken plays into positive plays. H praised Dickens for his "great touch", and he praised Davidson for his ability to get the ball out to the perimeter quickly. So which quarterback will it be starting the season with the #1 offense in Iowa City? We'll all probably have to wait until the number one offense takes the field Saturday for the Huskies' first offensive series.
