Much better start for Peralta.
After a nightmare debut for Tampa Bay following being acquired at the MLB trade deadline, Freddy Peralta bounced back nicely Monday in Sacramento. He wasn't flawless, but he didn't have to be. He allowed six hits across six innings, struck out five, and gave up three earned runs, with two coming in the first inning.
After the opening frame, he settled in nicely. The only other deviation came in the bottom of the fifth inning when Zack Gelof sent a solo home run to give the Athletics an early lead.
The bats continue to stay hot.
Other than a solo home run from Yandy Diaz in the top of the first inning, the bats started slow for Tampa Bay. However, after the Athletics got up to a 6-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Rays turned on the jets. The team picked up 8 unanswered runs, beginning with a three-run home run by Junior Caminero, his 34th of the season.
The home run couldn't come at a better time for Caminero , as he was struggling at the plate. Maybe the long ball will help him regain some confidence. He finished the day going 1 for 5 with the homer.
The team responded in a big way by getting a ton of base traffic against the Athletics' pitchers, and when they got traffic, they capitalized. The team was 5 for 13 with runners in scoring position, helping them gain double digits in the run column.
Exactly what the Rays needed.
With the team picking up their seventh straight win, they now pull ahead by six games of the New York Yankees for the American League East division lead. They are also up by eight games on the Boston Red Sox after their recent three-game losing streak. This is exactly what Tampa Bay needed during this stretch of games.
The team is currently facing multiple organizations with losing records and will not face a winning team until the last weekend of the month. While Tampa Bay is away from Tropicana Field, a place they have played very well in 2026, they had to capitalize, and so far they clearly have. The team is now 31-28 on the road and 72-46 on the season.
They will look for consecutive win number 8 as they take on the Athletics in the second game of the series. On Tuesday, Nick Martinez will get the start. He'll take on right-hander Mason Barnett for the Athletics. First pitch is scheduled for 9:40 p.m. Eastern.
