Ocean safety was front of mind Friday on the beach in Half Moon Bay amid dangerous surf conditions and on the heels of a dramatic water rescue in Santa Cruz.
The MeWater Foundation, a nonprofit in San Francisco that utilizes surf therapy for underserved youth, was teaching youngsters how to catch a wave while respecting the ocean’s power.
“The challenge is some people might look at the ocean and it might look kind of flat one moment and then the next thing you know there’s like a 6-foot wave,” MeWater Foundation founder Eddie Donnellan said. “Those are the days that are actually the most dangerous cause it’s misleading.”
Hazardous conditions at Bay Area beaches, including sneaker waves and strong rip currents, are expected to linger through Saturday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.
