The San Diego Padres are making a dramatic attempt to rebuild their starting rotation before the 2026 MLB trade deadline. San Diego is acquiring right-hander Casey Mize from the Detroit Tigers , according to multiple reports. FOX Sports: MLB was among the outlets reporting the agreement. The complete return heading to Detroit was not immediately known.
Mize gives the Padres another accomplished starter only hours after San Diego reportedly acquired former American League Cy Young Award winner Robbie Ray from the San Francisco Giants .
The 29-year-old Mize is 4-6 with a 2.70 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 85 strikeouts across 86 2/3 innings this season. He has allowed only 67 hits and 19 walks in 16 starts, making him one of the most effective pitchers moved before the deadline.
Mize is scheduled to become a free agent after the season, turning this into a high-upside rental for a Padres team attempting to secure a National League playoff spot.

Mize’s record does not accurately represent how well he pitched for Detroit.
The Tigers scored two runs or fewer in each of his final three starts, all losses. Mize still allowed only five earned runs across 15 innings during that stretch.
His best performance of the season came against the New York Yankees on June 29. Mize allowed only one hit across seven scoreless innings while striking out 10 and issuing no walks in Detroit’s 7-3 victory.
He followed that outing by holding the Texas Rangers to two runs across 6 2/3 innings.
Mize was also highly effective away from Comerica Park, posting a 3.07 ERA with 45 strikeouts across 41 innings in eight road starts. Opponents produced only 34 hits against him in those appearances.
San Diego is acquiring a pitcher who has demonstrated improved command and an ability to prevent damaging contact. Mize has surrendered only five home runs this season after allowing 19 across 149 innings in 2025. That improvement could make him especially valuable in a short postseason series.

The Padres entered Monday at 58-54, one game behind the Arizona Diamondbacks and facing a difficult path in the NL West behind the Los Angeles Dodgers . Their deadline activity suggests they have no intention of conceding anything.

The two pitchers offer different looks and could immediately strengthen the middle of the Padres’ rotation.
Mize was Detroit’s Opening Day starter in 2022 before undergoing Tommy John surgery and back surgery, procedures that caused him to miss the entire 2023 season. He returned in 2024 and then enjoyed a breakthrough campaign in 2025, going 14-6 with a 3.87 ERA and earning his first All-Star selection.
His performance reached another level in 2026.
Mize lowered his ERA by more than a full run while reducing his WHIP from 1.29 last season to 0.99. He also increased his strikeout rate and significantly reduced the number of home runs he allowed. San Diego is betting those gains will continue under the pressure of a playoff race.

Tigers continue selling after disappointing season
The Tigers entered Monday at 54-58 and 5.5 games behind the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central.
Detroit’s decision to trade Mize comes shortly after the club reportedly sent two-time Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal to the Dodgers. Moving both starters represents a major change in direction for an organization that entered the season with significant expectations. Mize was an obvious trade candidate because of his expiring contract and strong performance. The Tigers selected him with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft, but injuries prevented him from immediately becoming the franchise cornerstone many expected.
He departs Detroit with a 4.11 ERA and 450 strikeouts across 526 2/3 career innings.
The return will ultimately determine how the trade is judged from the Tigers’ perspective. For the Padres, the objective is much simpler. San Diego needed rotation help and landed two of the most recognizable starters available. Mize is no longer merely a former top prospect attempting to fulfill his potential. He is a proven All-Star producing a 2.70 ERA at the most important point of the season.
