The Red Sox didn’t trade for Adley Rutschman because they needed another star to carry the offense. They traded for him because catcher was one of the clearest places on the roster where they could make a meaningful upgrade.
Boston acquired the three-time All-Star from the Orioles at the deadline along with Jake Rogers, sending Carlos Narvaez and a prospect-heavy package to Baltimore. Rutschman is currently on the injured list with left wrist inflammation and is expected back around mid-August.
When he returns, Boston should be getting a better bat, an elite defensive catcher and another hitter capable of making the lineup tougher to navigate.
Adley Rutschman stats show a clear Red Sox upgrade
Rutschman is hitting .251 with a .331 on-base percentage, .433 slugging percentage and .764 OPS in 67 games this season, with eight home runs and 47 RBIs. He has also produced 1.8 WAR.
Those numbers aren’t quite the peak version of Rutschman, who posted an .809 OPS with 20 homers in 2023, but they still represent a sizable upgrade at catcher.
Narváez, who went to Baltimore in the trade, was hitting .187 with a .535 OPS through 62 games. Connor Wong can remain part of the catching mix, but Rutschman gives Boston more everyday offensive upside at the position.
That means the Red Sox don’t need him to immediately rediscover his All-Star peak. Simply maintaining his 2026 production raises the offensive floor.
There’s also value in Rutschman being a switch hitter. Boston can keep his bat in the lineup regardless of the opposing starter and make it harder for teams to create favorable bullpen matchups late in games.
Where Adley Rutschman could hit in Red Sox lineup
The easiest fit is probably somewhere between fifth and seventh.
Boston already has hitters such as Willson Contreras, Wilyer Abreu and Ceddanne Rafaela capable of producing in the top and middle of the order, with Roman Anthony giving the lineup another impact bat when healthy.

That placement would take some pressure off Rutschman while giving Boston a switch hitter capable of extending innings and creating RBI opportunities in the lower half.
If his power starts looking more like 2023 and 2024, moving him into the cleanup or No. 5 spot becomes realistic.
Rutschman’s defense could matter just as much in playoffs
The bigger value may come behind the plate.
Rutschman ranks in the 100th percentile in caught-stealing above average, 96th percentile in fielding run value and 93rd percentile in framing this season .
That gives Boston another run-prevention weapon for a postseason series. With Sonny Gray, Ranger Suárez and the rest of the pitching staff working in shorter, higher-leverage games, stealing strikes and controlling the running game can swing an inning.
It also allows Wong to slide into a more natural backup role rather than needing regular offensive production from the catching position.
How Adley Rutschman can help Red Sox remaining schedule
The timing could work well. If Rutschman returns around mid-August, he should have time to get comfortable before some of Boston’s biggest late-season stretches.
The Red Sox have four games at Yankee Stadium from Aug. 28-30, followed immediately by series against Seattle and Baltimore. September also includes a road series against Tampa Bay before Boston finishes the regular season with home series against Cleveland and the Cubs.
Those are exactly the types of games where an above-average catcher can have an outsized impact.
Boston isn’t just adding another bat. It’s adding a switch hitter, a high-end defender and an experienced catcher at a position that needed an upgrade.
If Rutschman stays healthy, that combination gives the Red Sox a more complete lineup — and a better chance of turning their second-half surge into a real October run.
