Secretly Awesome Admix Metal helps bring creative visions across architecture, design and visual art to life By Dana Langer, Alexa Jimenez Thursday, July 30, 2026 4:22PM Admix Metal helps architects, artists and businesses take their creative visions from concept to completion. NEW YORK -- As founder and owner of Admix Metal, Sung Joon Kim prides himself on beautifully blending artistry and functionality within all his projects. "I truly believe everyone is an artist," Kim says. "It's just a matter of getting your ideas into the real, material world." Kim's metalworking journey began while studying Studio Art at his alma mater, Wesleyan University. "Through Wesleyan, I kind of discovered a love for working with my hands and creating beautiful objects, and things of that nature." As a lifelong New Yorker, Kim's upbringing has also had an indelible impact on him as an artist: the industrialism of the iconic city has without a doubt influenced his love for metalwork. "I love metal because it's so necessary and abundant throughout design, and in structural elements," Kim says. "Aesthetically, it's super timeless; it's a beautiful material." After a series of post-graduate apprenticeships and standalone projects, Kim founded Admix Metal , a custom metal and wood fabrication shop based out of Ridgewood, Queens. "We work with a lot of architects, designers, artists, in helping them develop their ideas from concept to completion," Kim explains. "We do a variety of different things, and that's part of why I love what I do: you never know what to expect." The shop's projects have ranged from ornate art objects to more practical commissions, such as a ramp-to-table system for a Brooklyn wine store's inventory shipments. Regardless of a given project's use-case, Kim wants both his team and viewers of Admix's work to see the artistry within each and every project. "The ethos of Admix Metal is just to be creative, and be confident, and channel your inner artistry," Charlie Ayer, a fabricator with the shop, says. "Being proud of what you're working on, really seeing it come to fruition, it's a really good feeling." For Kim, one of the most fulfilling parts of managing Admix has been the ability to assist small businesses, local artists and individuals with their needs. "We really enjoy being able to help local designers and local artists," Kim says. "We love problem-solving, and showing that it's possible to make a living while helping other businesses and people with their needs." Kim's problem-solving, motivated attitude and artistic optimism shine through both Admix's work and its team. "I've always been kind of skeptical of my inner artist," Ayer says.
