The Buffalo Bills need every player possible on the roster ahead of their Week 1 fixture when the season begins. Fortunately, there’s encouraging news about Terrel Bernard after the linebacker missed Monday’s practice.
Head coach Joe Brady indicated there is no concern that Bernard’s absence will become a lingering issue. With Buffalo preparing for its September 13 opener against the Houston Texans, the team appears focused on having its key players healthy when the regular season begins.

Brady said Bernard “is going to be good to go” and suggested the Bills are being cautious with several players as they approach the final preseason game. Bills beat reporter for The Athletic, Joe Buscaglia, shared the head coach’s take in a recent X post.

Brady insinuated that are some injured starters/role players targeting Week 1 above all else.

The Bills have more than two weeks between their preseason finale and the regular-season opener. That gives the coaching staff considerable time to manage minor injuries without rushing players back onto the field. The linebacker has also dealt with an ankle issue that affected him throughout the 2025 season, making Buffalo’s cautious approach understandable.
Meanwhile, the franchise has several other players dealing with injuries, signaling a broader health situation worth monitoring ahead of Week 1. Monday’s practice saw four new players join Buffalo’s injury list. Outside linebacker Javon Solomon, center Sedrick Van Pran-Granger, and fourth-round rookie offensive tackle Jude Bowry left the contest early after contracting one injury or the other.
Besides the new additions, the Bills had several previously injured players remain sidelined. Wide receivers Khalil Shakir and Keon Coleman were absent after dealing with lower-body issues. Similarly, running back Ty Johnson, center Connor McGovern, defensive tackle Ed Oliver, and safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson also remained out.
McGovern and Johnson have missed time since August 8 after apparently suffering hamstring injuries. The Bills would hope they can quickly recover to make the team’s Week 1 game.
The Bills’ preseason game will be held against the Pittsburgh Steelers on August 27. However, Brady has openly disclosed that the team prioritizes regular-season football over preseason fixtures. That approach could be especially relevant for Bernard, who has become a critical part of the team’s defense since joining the league.
His ability to operate in space, communicate defensive assignments, and contribute against both the run and pass makes him difficult to replace. During the 2025 NFL season, Bernard played in 12 games and recorded 65 total tackles and one interception.
The Bills will need his solid experience when they begin a challenging 2026 schedule. Opening against Houston on the road presents an immediate challenge, and defensive communication will be especially important against a Texans offense capable of creating explosive plays.
Bernard was reportedly seen wearing a walking boot on Monday, making his situation one of the more notable situations to monitor. For now, however, Buffalo appears confident Bernard will be ready.
Thankfully, with the regular season still several weeks away, the Bills have time on their side. And many could anticipate most minor injuries to readily give way to Week 1 availability across the roster.
