A Foster City resident was arrested in connection with a six-alarm blaze that ripped through a condominium complex and left four firefighters injured last weekend, police said Thursday.
Keith Tompkins was arrested for unlawfully causing a fire resulting in injury to firefighters; obstructing and delaying a police investigation; and willfully resisting, obstructing, or delaying a fire investigation, according to police.
The blaze at the Spinnaker Cove condominium complex at 815 Sea Spray Ln. sparked Sunday afternoon and raged for several hours. Four firefighters were injured but are expected to be OK. Everyone was rescued, but the flames spread across roughly 50 units in the building, which was built in the 1980s and, according to residents, had no sprinklers.
Investigators determined the blaze was caused by an unattended gas grill on an exterior balcony.
Tompkins was taken into custody without incident and booked into the San Mateo County Jail, police said. He later posted bond and was released on Wednesday.
In a phone call with Tompkins on Thursday, he told NBC Bay Area that things are difficult right now, adding that he wasn’t sure if he should talk.
Tompkins previously spoke to NBC Bay Area a few times outside the burned condos.
Prosecutors on Thursday said they didn’t have the case file yet, but the district attorney confirmed the arrest and will wait while the police investigation continues.
