The Eagles quarterback welcomed James to the city Wednesday after the four-time NBA champion officially signed with the Philadelphia 76ers . Hurts said the move carries significance beyond basketball because of James’ influence throughout sports and popular culture.
“I think for what he represents in sports and sports culture, it’s huge — and it’s huge for the city of Philadelphia,” Hurts said. “It’ll be exciting to have a figure like that in the city, what he’s done, one of the greatest to ever do it. I’m excited to be a part of that.”
James, 41, is entering his 24th NBA season after spending the previous eight years with the Los Angeles Lakers . He joins a Sixers roster featuring Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, VJ Edgecombe and former Boston Celtics star Jaylen Brown.
Philadelphia acquired Brown earlier in the offseason before signing James, giving the franchise two proven champions to support its existing core. The additions have increased expectations for an organization that has not advanced to the Eastern Conference finals since 2001 or won a championship since 1983. Hurts knows how quickly a major acquisition can change the outlook of a Philadelphia team. The Eagles have repeatedly added prominent veterans around their established foundation while maintaining championship expectations.

He has won four championships, four Most Valuable Player awards, and is the NBA’s career scoring leader. Hurts has built his own legacy in Philadelphia by winning Super Bowl LIX and twice leading the Eagles to the NFC championship. James will attempt to author another memorable chapter during the final stage of his career.
Philadelphia already has one championship quarterback welcoming the pressure attached to the city. Hurts is eager to see one of basketball’s greatest players pursue a title in the same environment.
