See the full story · 1 sourcesThe Detroit Lions have placed three players on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list ahead of training camp, including starting safeties Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch.
Joseph (knee) and Branch (Achilles) have been recovering from injuries for months, so neither of their designations on the PUP list should necessarily come as a surprise. That's especially true for Branch, who tore his Achilles in a win over the Dallas Cowboys on Dec. 4.
"Look, there's no setbacks with him," Lions coach Dan Campbell said of Branch last month. "That's what I can tell you. He's doing a good job, he's putting in the work, but until we really get closer, I'd hate to start throwing a timetable on him."
Tight end Tyler Conklin, who has been dealing with an undisclosed injury since at least the spring, was also placed on the PUP list Sunday.
Rookies reported to Detroit for training camp Saturday. Veterans are set to arrive Tuesday, and the team will conduct its first practice Wednesday. Campbell is expected to speak with reporters Wednesday and potentially provide updates on Joseph, Branch and Conklin.
A PUP designation at the start of training camp simply means a player is not currently able to practice, and the player is eligible to be activated off the PUP list at any time. If anyone on the PUP list at the starting training camp remains there until after roster cutdowns, they will be moved to the reserve/PUP list, meaning they'll miss at least the first four games of the 2026 season.
Joseph's knee injury limited him to six games in 2025. Campbell, asked in June what he's expecting out of Joseph this season, said he's simply not sure: "Really, I don't know. I honestly do not know," Campbell said. "I know this: We've done everything we can, and he's done everything he can do to this point. And we are trying to be as smart as we can and not push this until we absolutely have to. Because once we've done that, then we'll know one way or another."
Added Campbell: "He's getting treatment, he's done some of these different things in different places to try to help. I feel good about that. I feel good about everything we've done, and so has he. We won't know. I mean, honestly, we probably won't know until we get into the thick of training camp."
