The Boston Red Sox have had a roller coaster of a 2026 MLB season. They've struggled for much of the year, but after their recent 15-game win streak, they're right back in contention and expected to be deadline buyers.
They've already traded for Curtis Mead using Connelly Early, a young lefty starting pitcher, to upgrade the offense. More could be on the horizon as well.
But one of the bigger pieces of news that came out recently involves Garrett Crochet. As USA Today's Bob Nightengale highlighted, Crochet, the left-handed ace, is now going to stick around through at least 2031 with a huge update to his $170 million contract.
Red Sox get huge Garrett Crochet news amid lengthy injury absence
"Boston Red Sox starter Garrett Crochet's injury prevents him from opting out of his contract after 2030 now that he'll have spent 120 days on the IL," Nightengale writes. "It also triggers a $15 million club option in 2032."
This piece of news is a significant one for the Red Sox and their team building over the next few seasons. The left-handed ace, who was the Cy Young runner-up a year ago, isn't leaving Boston for a long time.
He's now under contract through the 2031 season on a six-year, $170 million deal, with a $15 million club option for the 2032 season that, if Crochet returns to form, the Red Sox surely would pick up.
Nick Pivetta, a former Red Sox starter, has a similar situation with the San Diego Padres . However, his contract won't be extended if he misses time, but rather it'd be cut short, and he'd miss out on $32 million.

Crochet will have his deal further guaranteed, but loses the ability to opt out after 2030 now that he's missed the 120 days while on the injured list.
Compared to the contract situation coming into the regular season, where Crochet might've had a chance to leave the Red Sox after the 2030 season, this new update is a massive one for the future of the team.
The 27-year-old is now going to stick in Boston for at least the rest of 2026 and all of the way through the 2031 season now that he can't opt out of his contract.
He might not have opted out anyway, but now there's no doubt about his future in Boston. Crochet is a Red Sox starter for the next five seasons, if not more, depending on what the Red Sox do with the club option.
