The New York Jets have several difficult roster decisions looming, and according to Pro Football Focus, defensive tackle Mazi Smith is among the players worth watching. Ahead of the NFL's Aug. 30 cutdown deadline, PFF included Smith on its list of 10 NFL bubble players whose futures remain uncertain entering the final week of the preseason.
The designation highlights just how crowded the Jets' defensive tackle room has become. Smith arrived in New York last season as part of the trade package the Jets received in exchange for Quinnen Williams . A former first-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft, Smith entered the league with high expectations but has struggled to establish himself through his first three professional seasons.
Smith has played only 975 career snaps and owns a 34.5 overall defensive grade during that span. The Jets, meanwhile, have continued adding competition. Veterans David Onyemata and T'Vondre Sweat joined the defensive front this offseason, while Darrell Jackson Jr., Jowon Briggs, and Harrison Phillips have also contributed to one of the roster's deeper position groups.
That depth creates a challenging path for Smith. At just 25 years old, his draft pedigree and physical traits remain intriguing. However, roster decisions are often dictated by production, fit, and available opportunities.
With one preseason game remaining before final cuts, Smith still has time to strengthen his case. Whether that effort ultimately results in a roster spot with the Jets remains one of the more interesting questions facing the team as decision day approaches.
