The NFL ran the Pro Bowl format for 75 years, carrying significant prestige for the players who played in it. But Commissioner Roger Goodell decided to end the traditional event because the quality of play no longer met NFL standards.
Fan excitement plummeted due to half-speed defense. Moreover, since star players intentionally tried to avoid injuries, it felt like a meaningless exhibition game. Goodell tried patching it with a flag-football format, but none of it fixed the core problem.
The NFL is done trying to save it. So, they’re shutting it down for good.

NFL owners wrapped up a one-day meeting in Atlanta, and the league announced it is scrapping the Pro Bowl as a game for good, ending a run that dates back to 1951.
Instead, they will name 88 Pro Bowlers each season, with no game and no alternates needed to fill roster spots when players drop out. Those selected will be invited to an in-person celebration in Los Angeles in February, ahead of the Super Bowl.
Commissioner Roger Goodell didn’t shy away from telling reporters that he’s hated the game for a while now. In fact, all the way back in 2012, he complained that it wasn’t up to NFL standards after a goofy 59-41 game where the fans actually booed. Things only got worse recently when Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders was named to the roster late as an alternate.
“You’ve heard me say it for many years about the quality of the game in the Pro Bowl,” Goodell said, per Mark Maske of Front Office Sports . “I don’t think it’s up to NFL standards. And that’s why we changed to the flag game several years ago. So I’m not sure the last time you want to say we played a game in a football sense.”

He said the league spent the last couple of years polling Pro Bowl players directly on what they actually wanted out of the event. Surprisingly, the answer wasn’t about the game at all.
“We had conference calls the last couple years: What’s working? What’s not? What would you like to see?” Goodell said. “And the number one thing that came out, and there were a lot of wonderful comments by the players, one is: we want to be honored and celebrated as a Pro Bowl player. It just opened my eyes.”
According to reports , a group of high-profile star players — including quarterback Jalen Hurts , tight end George Kittle , and cornerback Jalen Ramsey — were directly involved in conference calls with the league. They told NFL executive Troy Vincent that they hated the non-competitive, half-speed nature of the games.
It is a bittersweet end to a tradition that actually started long before the modern era. Back in 1939, the league created the “Early All-Star Era,” which pitted the reigning NFL champion against a roster of highly motivated league all-stars. In those days, players fought like crazy for the pride of beating the champions. But over the next few decades, as player salaries skyrocketed and the risk of injuries grew too high, that fierce competitiveness completely vanished.
The NFL officially replaced tackle football with flag football and skills competitions in 2023. While non-contact flag football tournaments became highly popular pop-culture spectacles, like the viral Fanatics Classic featuring Tom Brady and Logan Paul , the league realized it couldn’t replicate that same entertainment value for its own all-stars.
Ultimately, the league accepted that it couldn’t force a competitive game out of players protecting their health.
