Now in his seventh major league season, the right-handed starter has spent the past two summers with the Cincinnati Reds after spending five years with the Kansas City Royals — the team that drafted him with the 18th overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft.
Singer arrived in Cincinnati in a trade that involved one of his college teammates — second baseman Jonathan India — and gave the Reds plenty of quality innings in the rotation during the 2025 campaign, amassing a 14-12 record along with a 4.03 ERA, 3.91 FIP and 1.24 WHIP over 169 2/3 frames of work, leading to the second-best fWAR total of his career at 2.9.
However, 2026 has not gone so great for the former Gator, going just 5-10 with a 4.35 ERA along with a bloated 5.17 FIP and 1.42 WHIP for just 0.7 fWAR over 107 2/3 innings. He has allowed the most home runs per nine innings (1.76) while striking out the second-fewest (7.61) per nine of his career, among other declining numbers.
He does have seven quality starts across his 21 outings, but his rough outings have unfortunately outnumbered his solid ones.
According to Statcast, Singer has been among the worst MLB hurlers this season, with his overall pitching run value ranking in the third percentile. He grades out in the 27th percentile or worse in seven key categories: chase percentage (27th), strikeout percentage (26th), barrel percentage (22nd), expected ERA (19th), expected batting average against (18th), average exit velocity (11th) and average fastball velocity (8th).
The fastball velocity stat stands out as he also sits in the third percentile in fastball run value. Singer leans heavily on his sinker, which he employs 47% of the time, while also using a cutter (7%) and a four-seamer (3%) sparsely; if the fastball is not working for him, that spells major trouble for the 2018 Dick Howser Trophy recipient. He also throws a slider (30%) and a sweeper (13%), but those combined land him among the 19th percentile in breaking ball run value.
The only area that Stacast grades Singer above average is his walk percentage, in which he resides in the 64th percentile among his MLB peers. His extension is also near-elite, coming in the 85th percentile, but that has not helped much as his fastball velocity sits three ticks below the MLB average (91.3 mph vs 94.5 mph).
Health has not been a particular issue for the Florida alumnus this season, although he has faced a couple of scares. Back in mid-April, Singer was struck on the foot by a comebacker against the San Francisco Giants but was still able to make his next start; the same thing happened in mid-May against the Washington Nationals, but again he remained in the rotation and made his next start on schedule.
Cincinnati has mirrored Singer's struggles this season, occupying last place in the National League Central division with a 52-58 record as of Sunday.

Over the course of his year-plus with the Reds, Singer is 19-22 with a 4.15 ERA, 4.44 FIP and 1.31 WHIP in 277 1/3 innings, striking out 254 against 96 walks while allowing 40 home runs, earning 3.5 fWAR during that stretch. Across his five seasons in Kansas City, he posted a 36-44 record with a 4.28 ERA, 3.97 FIP and 1.33 WHIP over 685 1/3 innings, striking out 645 against 214 walks while allowing 82 home runs for a total of 10.5 fWAR.
Across his six-plus seasons of big-league play, Singer is 55-66 with a 4.24 ERA, 4.11 FIP, and 1.32 WHIP over 962 2/3 innings, with 899 strikeouts and 310 walks, while allowing 122 home runs, resulting in a modest career fWAR of 14.0.
