Dodgers Could Trade 2 Veterans at Upcoming Deadline
The Los Angeles Dodgers may trade veterans Alex Call and Eric Lauer at this year’s Aug. 3 trade deadline, per Katie Woo of The Athletic.
The Dodgers don’t have many players to ship out at the trade deadline, but both Lauer and Call could find themselves elsewhere sooner rather than later as injured Dodgers return from the IL.
“Left-hander Eric Lauer and outfielder Alex Call are two names the Dodgers could shop, according to multiple league sources familiar with the team’s thinking, who were granted anonymity in exchange for their candor,” Woo wrote .
The Dodgers acquired Lauer in May, picking him up after the Blue Jays placed him on waivers due to his rough start to the year. Since joining the Dodgers, Lauer has done a fantastic job filling in the rotation, posting a 3.35 ERA through eight appearances through which he has a 4-0 record.
Unfortunately for Lauer, the Dodgers have their rotation—at least for the postseason—just about set, and could realistically get a decent prospect in return for the 31-year-old rental.
Call primarily fills in at both corner outfield positions for the Dodgers, so he already lost some playing time with Tommy Edman’s recent return. Kiké Hernandez can also play in those spots, and will return during the Dodgers’ next series against the Seattle Mariners.
With so many right-handed batters to fill those positions, the Dodgers could look to replace call with a more diverse bat.
“There are few right-handed bats available, and while Call wouldn’t be considered a power bat, his speed and plate discipline give him value as a depth piece for contending teams — as evidenced by the Dodgers trading for him last deadline,” Woo wrote.

What Would the Dodgers Seek in a Trade Return?
Woo reported earlier in the season that the Dodgers wanted to strengthen their pitching in the minor leagues, as most of their buzz in the lower levels surrounds Christian Zazueta—and that’s it.
Woo said the Dodgers could deal from their multiple outfield prospects, but their two veterans could do a similar job.
“The Dodgers want to improve the depth of their minor-league system and are prepared to part with at least one of their top outfield prospects not named Josue De Paula to do so,” Woo wrote .
“…The Dodgers are comfortable dealing from that position group to address other areas of their farm system, such as catching and middle-infield depth.
“The Dodgers’ starting pitching is thin in the upper minors, aside from River Ryan and Jackson Ferris. Los Angeles is believed to be searching for high-ceiling prospects in a potential trade and isn’t necessarily coveting major-league-ready talent in a return.”
