Langeliers, 28, sustained the injury while running the bases during Friday’s 2-0 win over the Minnesota Twins. His recovery timeline and possible return will be determined by whether or not surgery is required to repair the tear.
With surgery, Langeliers would be expected to require six to eight weeks to recover. That would put him on track to return in early to mid-September, which could take him to roughly one week before the end of the regular season. The Athletics currently hold the third-worst record in the American League at 44-60, so qualifying for the postseason is not a consideration.
However, Langeliers was expected to be a popular target at the Aug. 3 MLB trade deadline with several contenders including the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Tampa Bay Rays and Chicago White Sox pursuing a reliable bat at catcher.
The Athletics were also in position to get a nice return in exchange for Langeliers, who has two more seasons of arbitration eligibility after this season and could thus yield more in trade.
