NBA insider Jake Fischer reported earlier this week that Thompson "would welcome a return to Los Angeles," where he was born, which set off speculation that he could be headed to the Purple and Gold.
Thompson's father, Mychal, played for the Lakers from 1987 to 1991 and won two NBA championships with them. For many years afterward, the elder Thompson has been a color commentator for Lakers game radio broadcasts, and his heart is very much still with the team, despite his son's success in years past with the Golden State Warriors.
On X (formerly Twitter), a fan responded to the initial story of the younger Thompson welcoming a return to L.A. by tagging the elder Thompson and writing "Get back on it!" To which the elder Thompson replied , "I’m TRYING…"
It is debatable how much the younger Thompson could help the Lakers, or even if the Lakers have any genuine interest in trading for him. His skills have declined in recent years after he tore his ACL in 2019 and tore his Achilles in 2020, particularly on the defensive end, but he's still a potent 3-point shooter, even if he isn't as deadly in that department as he used to be.
Last season, the 36-year-old averaged 11.7 points in 21.7 minutes a game while shooting 38.3% from 3-point range and 39.3% from the field. He has one year left on his contract at $17.46 million.
