Suspect opens fire on 710 Fwy in Long Beach during chase that ended in DTLA crash By Abigail Velez Tuesday, September 1, 2026 12:04PM Power was knocked out across parts of downtown Los Angeles after a wild police chase that ended with a crash and left a trail of destruction Tuesday morning. KABC LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- A shooting suspect led police on a wild chase, opening fire on officers on the 710 Freeway in Long Beach before eventually crashing in downtown Los Angeles.
It all unfolded around 12:24 a.m. Tuesday when officers responded to a shooting on Aquarium Way. The two victims were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and another was treated at the scene.
Police tracked down the suspect vehicle near Burnett Street and Pacific Avenue, and a chase ensued.
That suspect headed north on the 710 Freeway and allegedly fired shots. That investigation has all northbound lanes of the freeway shut down at Long Beach Boulevard, along with the 91 Freeway connectors.
The chase ended when the suspect crashed into a power pole and fire hydrant near Santa Fe Avenue and 11th Street in downtown L.A., knocking out power and sending water rushing onto streets in the area.
The suspect was taken to the hospital in unknown condition.
Nobody was struck by gunfire during the chase or freeway shooting. Police say a firearm was recovered.
