After trading away David Montgomery to the Houston Texans in exchange for a fourth round draft pick in 2027 and more, the Detroit Lions needed to find star tailback Jahmyr Gibbs a new running-mate.
Former Chiefs RB Isiah Pacheco was signed to a one-year deal the day after the Montgomery trade went through, but his inconsistent performances over the past couple of years have left much to be desired, and may leave Lions fans wondering if he is sufficient insurance for arguably their best offensive weapon.
So it will perhaps not come as a surprise that Detroit is looking at other veteran options as training camp kicks off, as they worked out four players on Tuesday. According to Adam Schefter, one of those players is in fact Pacheco's former teammate in KC, ex-first round pick Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
Raheem Blackshear, who is best known for his three years spent in Carolina from 2022-24, has already been signed per the team's transaction wire, but that does not automatically eliminate the possibility of the Lions also adding one – or more – of the other tryout options.
Clyde Edwards-Helaire – or CEH – has not lived up to his initial selection point, despite having had a fairly successful rookie season that saw him rush for what is still his season-high of 803 yards, along with 297 yards receiving with 5 total touchdowns.
Ironically, part of his demise came from the fact that Pacheco, a seventh round pick two years later, took CEH's spot in the starting lineup, and eventually the lion's share of the touches running the ball.
Behind Gibbs and Pacheco, the team's next best option is Sione Vaki, who has recorded just 18 rushing yards in his first two seasons of professional football. So after the three-time Pro Bowler, it appears to be all to play for at running back.
