Homer in five consecutive games, and all of a sudden, they start pitching you like Barry Bonds.
Go figure.
Tigers prospect Bryce Rainer's historic home-run streak came to an end Friday, Aug. 21, in South Bend, Indiana. Rainer homered in each of his five previous games, but he didn't get many opportunities to extend his West Michigan Whitecaps record. Rainer finished the game 1-for-2 with a single, strikeout ... and three walks.
With one last shot to extend his sensational streak, Rainer walked in his final plate appearance of the night, in the ninth inning of the Whitecaps' 7-5 loss.
Rainer, 21, has been an absolute terror for High-A West Michigan, starting his homer streak with a blast Friday, Aug. 14, at LMCU Ballpark in Comstock Park against Lansing. He then homered the next day, and the next day. After an off day, he picked up the streak Tuesday, Aug. 18, to tie the franchise record with home runs in four straight games. Rainer took the record by himself with a home run the next day .
For his efforts, Rainer was given the day off Thursday, Aug. 20, before getting back to work Friday night.
Rainer has 16 home runs on the season, 15 of them with an .866 OPS for the Whitecaps. Before his five-game homer streak, the most games in a row he had homered during his professional career was two. He had done that on two occasions. The three walks tied the second-most of his career. He walked four times in a game earlier this season,
Rainer, a first-round draft pick in 2024 (No. 11 overall), is the Tigers' No. 3 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline .
He began this season at Low-A Lakeland, before earning a quick April call-up to West Michigan.
Time will tell if he makes the move to Double-A Erie in 2026. It might be too late in the season.
