Broncos' Sean Payton Sets Expectation For QB Bo Nix

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton is happy with having third-year quarterback Bo Nix back in training camp on time, considering his injury last season.
Nix injured his ankle in the AFC Divisional Round last season, and he recovered in time for training camp, as expected. Now, Payton has laid out what he expects of Nix in 2026.
"The 'next step' is kind of cliché," Payton told reporters on Wednesday. "I mean, he just finished winning 14 games and having a really good season. Do I think he's going to continue to improve? Yes."
Improving may have subjective categories to hit because the Nix and the Broncos will be hard-pressed to build in 2025. The AFC West just got tougher with the Kansas City Chiefs getting quarterback Patrick Mahomes back healthy for training camp. The Los Angeles Chargers look ready for another playoff run, too.
Nix may need more game-winning drives than he had last year, seven, in a highly competitive division. He completed 63.4% of his passes for 3,931 yards and 25 touchdowns versus 11 interceptions last season.
Denver gave Nix more help in the offseason with the addition of wide receiver Jaylen Waddle. That should open up the passing game with Waddle’s speed and ability to get separation.
As much as the Broncos impressed on the way to the No. 1 seed last season, Denver needs to find more scoring punch. The Broncos averaged 23.6 points per game, 14th in the league last season.
Nix connecting with Waddle could help change that. In addition, the Broncos are looking to get more out of the running game with the addition of running back J.K. Dobbins.
"I think there's certain areas for us offensively that can help with the quarterback — a consistent run game throughout the year," Payton said. "There's some things we can do to help him."
